The James Clemens boys basketball team led by as much as 20 over the Austin Black Bears in the first round of the class 7A Area 8 Tournament on Thursday before the Bears closed the gap to 7 late. It was too little too late for the Black Bears, who had previously defeated the Jets twice in the regular season, as the Jets sank several key free throws down the stretch and secured the 59-51 win. The victory puts the Jets in the championship game for the tournament on Saturday at 7 PM against host team Florence. The Jets overall record now stands at 19 wins and 11 losses.
Garrett Hicks led all scorers with 20 points. AJ McGinnis was close behind with 15 points. Deacon Goldman added 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Cameron Harris had 5 points and 7 rebounds.
With the win the Jets are assured a spot in next week’s Northwest Regional in Hanceville for the second consecutive year.
