Jets sweep Mountain Brook, advance to state quarterfinals…
On a beautiful Friday night at a beautiful field at Mountain Brook, the James Clemens Jets won both ends of their first-round double-header, 9-5 and 5-2. The first game was tied 1-1 in the top of the third with two outs when Jackson Taylor lined a 3-1 pitch over the center fielder’s head for a base-clearing double and a 4-1 lead. Tommy Crider’s RBI double put the Jets up 5-2 in the 4th, but the Spartans kept pecking back. In the 5th, an RBI double by Connor Cantrell, followed by a balk, put the Jets ahead 7-3. Zack Toth came on to pitch in a jam in the 5th and slammed the door. A 2-run double by Dylan Kridner gave the Jets some insurance, so the 2 runs scored by MBHS in the bottom of the 7th were harmless.
Jackson Taylor had 3 hits, Kridner and Crider each added 2 doubles, and Collin Brown and Cantrell also contributed 2 hits apiece. Laken Lansdell picked up the win and Zack Toth the save.
The second game was a back-and-forth affair until the bottom of the 4th. Tied 2-2 with 2 outs and 2 runners on, Collin Brown hit a ground ball that the MB shortstop fielded cleanly but threw away, allowing 2 runs to score. The Jets added one run on an RBI double by Brown in the 6th,and that was plenty of support for Jackson Reece, who pitched 6 innings, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 6 hits and one walk. He fanned 3. Tyler Legere was electric in the 7th, striking out 2 for the save.
The Jets managed only 6 hits in the second game, but 3 were doubles, by Brown, Cantrell, and Zack Hopkins.
The Jets will travel to Hewitt Trussville to face the Huskies in the round of 8 in a doubleheader on Friday. The first pitch is slated for 4:30 PM. The Huskies eliminated Hoover in 3 games with a split on Friday and a decisive game three win on Saturday.
